OSD Presents…Handy Hints (26)

Everyone wants to protect their children at separation, however, when emotions are heightened, the last thing on some parents’ minds is “whatever I do, or say and how I react has to be in the best interest of the children”.

Some events are likely to upset you such as:
– Receiving a lawyer’s letter about your matter;
– Finding out your ex-spouse has re-partnered;
– Attending Court; or
– worrying if you will have enough money for the future.

As hard as it may be, you need to refocus during these stressful times to ensure that:

+ You do not talk to the children about your stresses;

+ You do not leave important letters/documents relating to Court events and separation laying around for young eyes to read;

+ You remain amicable with your ex-spouse, at least when your children can witness your behaviour towards one another;

+ You don’t “cross-examine” the children about what your ex-spouse is doing or who they are seeing; and

+ When the children are in your care, don’t be glued to your phone or computer, focus on them.

Always remember, keeping the children’s environment safe, happy, positive and active is always a good foundation during the emotional times ahead.
