James Claringbold

James started at O’Sullivan Davies in 2006 while studying law at the University of Western Australia. Soon after graduating with a double law degree in Law and Arts, he was employed by the firm as an articled clerk. James was admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of Western Australia in 2008 and the High Court of Australia in 2010.

After relocating to central London in 2010, James worked as a solicitor at a top family law firm, gaining experience on a number of complex “big money” and high-profile matters. He returned to Australia and to O’Sullivan Davies in 2012, and in 2019 he was made a Partner.

James was initially attracted to family law because of the human element, because, as he states, relationships are the foundation of society, and issues that arise in family law affect people from all backgrounds. He appreciates that each case has its unique circumstances and facts, which require a broad knowledge and understanding of many aspects of the law, and this makes his work interesting and challenging. He has a particular interest in complex financial settlements, the law relating to de facto relationships and cases with an international element.

James is known for his acute attention to detail, timeliness, responsiveness, diligence and a good work ethic. Add to that an easy-going manner, compassion and empathy, along with awards and recognition from his peers, it is easy to understand why clients value working with James.

Colleagues also value working with James; he sees the firm as an extension of his family and he ensures it fosters a supportive culture, values education, growth, new ideas and collaboration.

James is a member of the Family Law Section of Australia, Family Law Practitioners Association of WA, Law Society of WA, AAIFLAM, and Anglo-Australian Family Lawyers’ Association.

Aside from keeping up to date with new and interesting developments in family law, James keeps his mind stimulated with creative pursuits. He is a bass player, wine maker and enjoys travelling, architecture, and reading.

James is married with two children and a border collie.

What clients have said about James:

I feel like the ground is solid below my feet again once I have spoken to James.  He always makes time to speak to me and his explanations are always clear.  I feel safe and secure with James acting for me.  He has my back.  MM
