Rick O'Brien / Partner

Rick graduated from the University of Western Australia in 1981 and has worked primarily in Family Law since his admission to practice. Prior to joining O'Sullivan Davies in 2001, Rick was for 12 years a Partner at one of Perth's largest commercial and litigation firms, Jackson McDonald, including a 2 year term as Managing Partner.

Rick is the Chair of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, and is the first West Australian to be elected to that role. The Family Law Section is the peak national body representing Family Lawyers both publicly and in regular consultation with government and the Courts, and is heavily involved in all issues arising from the frequent changes to Family Law.

Rick is a past President of the Family Law Practitioners' Association of WA, having previously served as Secretary and Vice President. He was formerly Chairman of the Legal Aid Review Committee, dealing with Family Law matters, is a member of the Law Society's Professional Conduct Committee and has been appointed to the Law Society's Senior Advisors Panel.

Outside work and his family, Rick's primary interest has long been the sport of volleyball. As a player he represented WA in State Teams for many years, including a period as captain, and held a scholarship from the West Australian Institute of Sport. He coached numerous State teams, was Head Coach of the Australian Junior team, and was an assistant coach for the Australian Team at the Sydney Olympics. He was awarded Life Membership of Volleyball WA in 1990.
