Outside work and his family, Rick's primary interest has long been the sport of volleyball. As a player he represented WA in State Teams for many years, including a period as captain, and held a scholarship from the West Australian Institute of Sport. He coached numerous State teams, was Head Coach of the Australian Junior team, and was an assistant coach for the Australian Team at the Sydney Olympics. He was awarded Life Membership of Volleyball WA in 1990.
